Ko Samui, one of Thailand’s largest islands in the Gulf of Thailand, is known for its palm-fringed beaches circling coconut groves and dense, mountainous rainforest. It’s also home to luxury resorts, posh spas and a rowdy nightlife scene that often attracts a backpacker crowd. The 12m-tall golden Big Buddha statue at Wat Phra Yai temple is a local landmark.

Krabi, on southern Thailand’s west coast, is a province characterized by craggy, sheer limestone cliffs, dense mangrove forests and more than a hundred offshore islands. The famed Phi Phi Islands, which look like giant rainforested boulders jutting from the sea, and Railay Beach, accessible only by boat and a favorite rock-climbing spot, are some of its most popular beach destinations.

Thailand: South

Like us, Philippe Grenier has got a bad case of the travel bug. His trip to Thailand, captured here, is just one part of a five-month adventure. This video is his visual backpacker’s journal that captures the natural and cultural beauty he saw (and the pad Thai he ate). His advice: Avoid busy beaches of Ko Phi Phi and Phuket. Instead, head for the island of Khao Sok. Once there, find a tree house to sleep in and a scooter to zip around the island. On another small island, Ko Tao, enjoy affordable diving, clear blue waters and a good-old-fashioned pub crawl. In Thailand, it’s always five o’clock somewhere.
